party. he twice supported president obama and talks about a deep vein of tolerance within the party. >> general powell and i have been friends since he quit being a general. we don't see everything the same way. one thing plain, republicans in this election did poorerly among hispanics and poorly among african-americans. the good thing is with the right kind of policies and the right kind of effort we'll do that. remember george bush got 44% of the hispanic vote. >> you once said colon powell is on the main street of the policy. >> what do you think of his comments, particularly about intolerance? >> i think he is spot on and i see the republican party moving away from the olympia snowe's and people with great ideas. the rhetoric in this last campaign really turned off a lot of people, black, lateineo and gay. i saw newt gingrich talking about marriage equality and how the republican party will have to start embracing or be left behind. i think that is very, very true. i would love to see stop thinking how to win elections and how to address the issues of america. if we focus on sol

with some politics, i'm struck when you talk about republicans as they. i know you insist despite voting for president obama twice now that you're still a republican. but as i go through your record on some social issues and even foreign policy issues i challenge to you say on what basis are you still a republican? do you feel like this republican party has left you or have you left it? >> i think the republican party right now is having an identity problem. and i'm still a republican. i'm a republican who grew up along with george bush xli. i grew up with ronald reagan, cap weinberger, frank carlucci that republican party, the problemen party of dick lugar and john tower. but in recent years, there's been a significant shift to the right and we have seen what that shift has produced, two losing presidential campaigns. i think what the republican party needs to do now is take a very hard look at itself and understand that the country is changed. the country is changing demo graphically. if the republican party does not change along with that demographic, they are going to be in trouble.

is shucking and jiving. that's a racial era slave term. >> powell is most likely talking about former alaska governor sarah palin who blasted president obama for his handling of the benghazi consulate attack on facebook writing in part, "why the lies? why the cover up? why the dissembling about the cause of the murder of our ambassador? on the anniversary of the worst terror attacks on american soil. we deserve answers to this. president obama's shuck and jive shtick with these benghazi lies must end." joining me now cnn contributor and senior writer for cnn.com, gra l.z. granderson. and will cain. palin defended the remarks saying there was nothing racist about them. was there? >> i'm going to go with no, carol. you know this is always my favorite segment. why are republicans racist? are you racist? tell me again what is not racist about conservatism? it's always the burden of proof to prove you're not a racist, which is a near impossible thing to do. i understand you're not asking me about my personal views. you're asking about a party. i don't know, whatever that is, tens of millions of p

committee. you're talking about the debt ceiling debate. wall street journal says that president obama has escalated the fight. let me show you a little of what he said. [video clip] >> if congressional republicans refuse to pay america's bills on time, social security checks and veterans' benefits will be delayed. we might not be able to pay our troops or honor our contracts with small business owners, food inspectors, air traffic controllers, specialists who track down loose nuclear materials would not get their paychecks, investors around the world will ask if the united states of america is a safe bet. markets could go haywire. interest rates would spike for anyone who borrows money. every homeowner with a mortgage, every student with a college loan, every small business owner who wants to grow. host: your reaction? guest: first, thanks for having me on the show, greta. i have owned the business over 20 years as an entrepreneur, have been looking at budgets for over 30 years. even now, as a businessman who has had a season of public- service, i have 150 employees in virginia. so this i

and president barack obama's campaigns and tony, from talk radio news service, tony? >> wow, i actually also make tv ads for a living, megyn and obviously, sometimes you do take creative license, but in that particular ad two things bothered me he the most the images of sandy hook, we know what we felt, every american with a heartbeat. and anti-gun groups really are now trying to guilt people into a position, and how much do you restrict and limit the second amendment. and number two the words they omitted and music added to the background. he said my grandfather had a gun to stop a lynching and my father had this rifle to protect our family. and creates an impression he's he a cowboy who misuses or abuses rather, his second amendment right and it's irresponsible and troubling this is the tempo for the debate. if you rightfully own a gun and believe in the second amendment you somehow are complicit or nefarious person and complicit with the sandy hook massacre. >> megyn: mark? >> nobody cares why john barrow's grandfather had the smith & wesson. nobody is trying to take it. and we're looking

. opponents of gun control will be meeting and talking coordinating their efforts on a regular basis. the question how effectively will they do it? the advantage of using obama for america is, is has a gigantic list of people and know a lot about them and how to motivate them and get them out. bill: i still don't know if republicans can counter that. what they found out in november, these people know how to reach their voters! that republicans could not even account for. >> but remember the purpose here. it is not to get that person out to vote. it is to get that person to influence a member of congress to go their way. my point is this, if you're a member of congress who is republican you're sitting here saying these are not local people whose votes we are trying to get. these are partisans. i dompblt need to pay attention. if you're a democrat in awkward place, red district, red state and put awkward place by your president you're saying what the heck are they doing? don't they understand? i can't be for this. bill: we'll watch the points you make especially on the ethics matter. a
